12:46 a.m. I'm in the middle of a mini trend-let of night entries, completed once the light is gone and I've finished puttering around the house. It's the old way I always used to work when the kids were little. I'd wait until the last of the lights were turned off and the whispering and punching and giggling stopped and then ... then I'd put some water on to boil for tea and go around picking up sweaters and school notes and sneakers and crumbs. Eventually I'd work on whatever. That actually doesn't matter so much anymore ... but at the time way back then, I used to think that my real day could only begun when everyone else was asleep. I had school work to do, courses to take, classes to teach, papers to write. The kids took their baths and climbed into bed and surreptitiously grew a little bit each night. |
I mean, I am at a loss to explain where the time went. One minute I thought I would never get a minute to myself. I found myself saying what my mother always said: "All I want (for Christmas, Mother's Day, birthdays) is a little peace and quiet. Is that so much to ask?" And now, in the utter silence of a still September day, I leaf through the perfectly organized photos and all I want is a little piece of the past. Is that so much to ask? Today is our youngest child's birthday, and she is 26. I am her stepmother, and in spite of trying, we were not the Brady Bunch. All my kids, at various times, have pointed this fact out. I'm glad that I have been able to make good money off the real Brady Bunch by producing a cookbook with Ann B. Davis, who played Alice on the show -- I feel they owe it to me and my kids for all the inaccurate representations and sunny lies. We all wanted to believe. |
And now, because I can, here's a recipe from Alice:
In a large saucepan combine the cranberries, water, and 1 cup of sugar. Cook over medium heat for 10 minutes or until thick, stirring frequently. Beat the egg, 1/4 cup of sugar, and the flour. Add the mixture to the cranberries. Stir in the sour cream and cook for about 4 minutes. Pour the filling into the pie crust. Refrigerate overnight. Top with whipped cream before serving. Alice's Note: A wonderful way to serve those traditional cranberries. Makes 8 servings. * |
Two are married. This little girl is getting married this weekend. Happy birthday! Happy wedding! Save us some cake. |
