 (the foods we bless)

-- Wednesday, April 19, 2000 --

11:37 a.m. Herewith an artistic rendering of the celebratory foods on a Passover Seder plate. Artistic because the original photo was a little dark and there wasn't time to take a new one ... so I've lightened the original and applied "poster edges" to it to make it ... artistic.

The foodstuffs on this plate are a bit unusual and might even give one pause, were it not for the ceremonial aspects of the moment. The food stands for states of being, for things that happened long before recorded history. The stuff of memory.

There's a lamb shank and some parsley and an egg, some horseradish and some chopped-up apple, fruit, and wine. Sweet, bitter; and inevitably, the egg.
