(old mixer)
(left fish) ~ Saturday, April 14, 2001 ~ (right fish)

2:02 p.m. Here is a photo of our old mixer, taken in our old kitchen, where it matched the decor and all was well.

Astute readers will certainly know where this is going.

I bought the mixer on eBay, and it was, in fact, my very first purchase. It was the very item that hooked me on eBay in general and it took me almost a year and a whole lot of buying and selling before I was actually free of the service.

But are you ever really free?

I mean -- I'm sort of thinking of putting the old mixer back up for sale now that it absolutely positively doesn't go with the kind of kitchen I have now. Now I need a brand spanking new chrome model, or one that's blue or green or red or yellow. Plus one of those nifty toasters and the orange expresso machine from Williams S., but for now, we'll just focus on the mixer.

Today we used it because Igor, who's experiencing extreme Passover adherence issues, decided to make: matso pancakes. Recipe on the box. I wasn't really watching the action or noticing what he was up to until he asked me what "stiff" eggwhites meant.

He was, at that moment, aimlessly flapping a fork through the clear white goo in the bowl and looking frustrated. I looked up from the newspaper and sighed. It's always something.

I haven't really been keeping up with the mixer these days and so I had to wash the bowl inside and out before using it, and then I had to figure out, all over again, how to attach the one and only blade, and then when it wasn't working, I had to actually remember to plug it in. But in just seconds after all of that, the whites were beaten to a fare de froth and Igor was back in business.

Over breakfast, we got to talking about the older houses we've lived in and loved. We talked about the ones that got away. We talked about old houses vs. modern, cutting-edge artistic houses ... angel food cakes and meringues and maybe I should consider a food drying machine since I'm working on a cookbook again ... hot flashes and the cost of potatoes and whether or not soybeans are legumes (are they?) and whether or not there was a good movie on TV tonight (there was not) ... and will we stay in this house much longer or will we have to put it up for sale and move on ...

... and so went another Saturday morning. Interesting, light, and chewy.

Needless to say, the matso pancakes were odd.
